ISONIC 3505 – Portable Smart All-In-One Ultrasonic Flaw Detector and Recorder Settling a New Standard in the UT Instrumentation.
ISONIC 3505 carries the exceptionally innovative ultrasonic card with never-saturated-receiver – for the first time ever the instrument digitizes the originally received signals independently on the gain and rectification settings in every firing / receiving cycle keeping the linearity over 140 dB dynamic range. Once the single A-Scan or the sequence of A-Scans forming a record is stored into a file it may be reproduced off-line in the form desired by an operator (RF, half- or full wave rectified, FFT) at any gain level over the 140 dB range. So even in case of very significant deviation of the pre-inspection gain setting from the required value the observation and evaluation of the recorded data may be performed at the right levels without secondary scanning.

The new ISONIC 3510 is a successor of the very successful ISONIC 2010 instrument, which is present on the market since more than 6 years ago and became the standard in the significant number of industries around the Globe.
In the ISONIC 3510 PA modality is carried by the fully parallel non-multiplexed 32:32 electronics with independently adjustable emitting and receiving aperture, each may consist of 1…32 elements when operating one PA probe or 1…16 elements per probe in case of operating two PA probes simultaneously: there is no external splitter required for the simultaneous use of 2 PA probes.
64- and 128-elements PA probes may be used with ISONIC 3510 as well upon they are connected to the corresponding instrument’s terminals through the various miniature extenders expanding the functionality to the fully parallel 1 X 64:64, 2 X 32:32, 1 X 128:128, and 2 X 64:64 modes with no multiplexing involved (depending on the type and quantity of the extenders). The groups of PA probe elements composing the emitting and receiving aperture are freely adjustable and may be fully or partially matching or totally separated allowing the flexible managing of the incidence angles, focal distances, types of radiated and received waves including the directly reflected and the diffracted signals either mode converted or not. Each channel is equipped with the own pulser-receiver and A/D converter. Parallel firing, A/D conversion, and ”on-the-fly” digital phasing are performed for every possible composition and size of the emitting and receiving aperture so the implementing of each focal law is completed within a single pulsing/receiving cycle providing the maximal possible speed of the material coverage.
In addition to the PA electronics ISONIC 3510 carries 2 independent conventional channels for implementing of the regular UT and TOFD inspection; each conventional channel is capable for both single and dual modes of use.
The top level ultrasonic performance is achieved through the firing of PA, TOFD, and conventional probes with the bipolar square wave initial pulse with wide-range-tunable duration and amplitude (up to 300 Vpp). The high stability of the initial pulse amplitude within entire duration of the positive and negative half-waves, the extremely short boosted rising and falling edges and the automatic adaptive damping improve the signal to noise ratio and resolution allowing controlling of the analogue gain over the 0…100 dB range for each modality
As its well-known predecessors ISONIC 2010 and ISONIC 2009 UPA Scope the new ISONIC 3510 is a powerful platform for the huge number of the practical PA UT applications available for the activation at any moment. Thanks to the unique True-To-Geometry Volume Overlap Coverage and Real Time Imaging the ISONIC 3510 is suitable for the high performance inspection of the simple and complex geometry welds (butt, longitudinal, fillet, lap, corner, elbow, etc) with scanning from one or both sides simultaneously (if applicable), bolts, bridge hanger pins, wind turbine and other shafts, annular rings, flanges, railway axles and wheels, CRFP and GRFP composite panels, profiled items, and the like. The precise and easy reproducible automatic Equalizing of the Sensitivity within Entire Cross-Section / Volume of the Material is provided by the unique TCG-independent angle gain / gain per focal law compensation solution along with the DAC / TCG image normalization. Thanks to the above noted True-To-Geometry Volume Overlap Coverage and Imaging and Equalizing of the Sensitivity within Entire Cross-Section / Volume of the Material the inspection results produced by the ISONIC 3510 and its predecessors are easy interpretable and well acceptable by the UT Pros and non-Pros as well.

Thanks to their unique smart, flexible, and “teachable” architecture combined with the outstanding ultrasonic performance ISONIC 3510, ISONIC 2010, and ISONIC 2009 UPA Scope have been the ideal platforms for practically unlimited number of standard and customized inspection software applications, the number of which is increasing permanently.
Each application is dedicated to the resolving of the inspection tasks related to the certain class of parts and materials to be tested (the similar shape parts varying by the overall dimensions and the dimensions of particular segments). Since the part to be inspected is outlined the scan plan is created just in few moments providing the True-to-Geometry Volume Corrected Coverage and imaging. This makes it possible to inspect complex geometry parts easily.

With the new VAUT (Video Aided UT) technology from Sonotron NDT, the UT operator may observe the live image of the ultrasonic probe either conventional or PA manipulated over the calibration block or the real test piece along with the corresponding UT data, for example the A-Scan, Sectorial scan, and the like, on the same instrument screen. For the first time ever this allows 100% – dedicated operator’s attention to the instrument screen whilst optimizing the ultrasonic signal and / or image and the probe position on the test piece synchronously. Every A-Scan and / or ultrasonic image data obtained at the certain probe position may be stored into a file comprising the UT data with the embedded photo representing the test piece and the probe position; the said embedded photo is assigned to the UT data inside the file only. On opening the file the photo showing the test piece and the probe position on it appears along with the UT data stored.
In case the video camera is settled into a static position either on the test piece or nearby and the observed frame covers the whole intended area of scanning or a part of it the VAUT technology allows recording of the scanning data either TOFD, strip chart, C-Scan, etc. into a file comprising the UT data with the embedded video of the scanning process synchronized with the encoded probe position. On opening the file the recorded video will be played in accordance with ultrasonic data recoverable for each probe position along the scanning trace
Alternatively the video camera may be fitted into a scanner or encoder frame and focused onto the certain area of interest, for example – the weld surface. In that case the inspection results file will carry the UT data synchronized with the VT (Visual Testing) providing the dual modality inspection results obtained in one pass and comprised together increasing the global productivity of NDE
The VAUT is a standard feature of the new generation ultrasonic instruments of ISONIC 35 series from Sonotron NDT, the first two of which, namely ISONIC 3505 and ISONIC 3510. All that is required to run VAUT is to have a standard USB camera connected to the instrument.
The new instruments of ISONIC 35 series allow connection of several cameras and processing of several video streams simultaneously. This opens the opportunity of the video-encoded scanning with the ultrasonic probe either conventional or PA without add-on devices such as encoders, probe holders, etc similarly to the famous Hawkeye® tennis ball tracing technology.
Along with the video data the VAUT technology allows embedding of the GPS- or GLONASS- coordinate and the RFID data of the part under test into the inspection files provided the appropriate standard equipment for this is connected to the instrument at the time of inspection. Along with the photo and / or video the global position and RFID data embedded into the same UT inspection files will improve the operation and reliability of the RBIM (Risk-Based Inspection and Maintenance) data bases avoiding the mistaken assigning of the NDT results to the wrongly designated objects.
